Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Car cranks but doesn't start (fuel pulse killed by VATS)
  • Engine starts then dies after 1-2 seconds
  • Resistor pellet in key worn out or broken
  • VATS wires under steering column broken / corroded
  • VATS resistor module failed (under dash)
  • Engine swap — VATS chassis donor ECM needs to run in non-VATS chassis

Won't fix:

  • No-crank conditions (test starter + battery)
  • Mechanical fuel pump or injector failure
  • Post-2005 GM with Passlock (see GM Cluster Upgrade service)

Is this for VATS or Passlock?
VATS — the older resistor-pellet key system used 1986-2005. Passlock (1995+) is different and uses a magnetic Hall sensor in the column. For Passlock issues, see our GM Cluster Upgrade + Mileage Program service.
Will my car still pass emissions / smog?
Yes. VATS is independent of the emissions system. The OBD-I or OBD-II readiness, fuel trims, and emissions codes operate identically to before — only the anti-theft authentication is bypassed.
Do I need to send the key?
No. After VATS delete, any physical key that mechanically turns the ignition will start the car. Existing keys still work; the ECM just stops checking the resistor value.
Can I reverse this if I sell the car?
Yes — we archive the original ECM data for 90 days. Within that window, restore is $75. After 90 days, restoration is best-effort.
My VATS module is bad — does this fix that too?
It makes the VATS module irrelevant. The ECM stops checking, so a bad VATS module under the dash no longer affects starting. You can leave the bad module in place or remove it.
