HONEST COMPARISONS

AML vs The Alternatives

We don't pretend AML wins every scenario. These pages tell you honestly when we win — and when something else is the right call.

Auto Module Lab vs eBay Sellers
AML vs

eBay sellers

eBay listings often look cheaper at $79-$130, but the seller doesn't cover return shipping, doesn't warranty programming, and provides no accountability if the work fails. Auto Module Lab is $150 flat with return shipping included, 6-month warranty, certified workshop. For one-off jobs the savings often disappear once shipping + risk are factored in.

Auto Module Lab vs Dealer Programming
AML vs

dealer programming

Dealer programming for European module work (BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Audi) typically runs $1,200-$3,500 once you factor in diagnostic time, programming labor, SCN coding fees, and shop overhead. AML's mail-in flat pricing is $75-$550 for the same operation. Dealers still win when the car needs to be present for the work (e.g. wiring faults, sensor diagnosis) or when your warranty would be voided by aftermarket work.

Auto Module Lab vs Local Locksmith
AML vs

local locksmith

Local locksmiths win when your car needs to be present (lost keys, lockouts, on-car key programming, ignition problems). AML wins when the work is bench-only (immobilizer delete, EIS cloning, cluster repair, module work the locksmith can't do in-house). Most independent locksmiths don't own the bench equipment for European module work — they'll send it to a workshop like ours anyway, with their markup added.

Auto Module Lab vs Buying DIY Bench Tools
AML vs

DIY bench tools

Bench programming tools (VVDI Key Tool Plus, Xhorse, Autel IM608, Lonsdor K518) range from $1,200 to $6,000 for the tool alone — plus annual subscriptions ($500-$1,500), token costs ($5-$30 per operation), and 20-50 hours of learning curve. For shops doing 30+ jobs per year on one brand, owning the tool pays back. For occasional jobs or one-off DIY repairs, AML's mail-in service is cheaper and faster.

Auto Module Lab vs PCM Flash / Tuning Services
AML vs

PCM flash / tuning services

PCM flash / tuning services (HP Tuners, EFI Live, Dimsport, Cobb) modify engine calibration — fuel maps, ignition timing, boost, transmission shifts. AML does immobilizer + key + module programming — which has nothing to do with performance tuning. These are completely different services that get confused often. AML wins when your problem is immobilizer/security-related. Tuning shops win when your problem is performance/calibration-related.
