GM HMI Infotainment, Radio & Cluster VIN / Theft-Lock Unlock (2014+ Global A/B)

We clear the VIN theft-lock from a used GM HMI screen module, radio, or instrument cluster so it powers up and works in your vehicle instead of showing a Theft Lock screen.

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Theft Lock message on a swapped-in used HMI or radio
  • Black screen / boot-loop on a donor infotainment module
  • Used instrument cluster showing locked / VIN-mismatch behavior
  • Replacement screen module that won't accept the new VIN
  • Donor radio that powers but stays non-functional

Won't fix:

  • Hardware failures (cracked LCD, dead touch panel, water damage, failed backlight)
  • Wrong-build mismatch - an IO5 unit cannot become IO6, and nav/Bose options must match the RPO
  • Network/wiring faults, blown fuses, or amplifier issues outside the module
  • Vehicle-side anti-theft faults originating in the BCM or body modules

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

What does Theft Lock mean on a GM HMI or radio?
On Global A/B vehicles (2014+) the HMI, radio and cluster store the vehicle VIN as anti-theft protection. Install a used module from a different VIN and it locks itself, showing a Theft Lock screen until the VIN lock is cleared.
Do I need to match IO5 vs IO6?
Yes. IO5 is the non-navigation HMI and IO6 includes embedded factory navigation. Match hardware version and options like Bose too. We unlock the VIN lock, but the donor must be the correct build to function fully.
Will the unlocked module need in-car setup after I install it?
After we clear the theft lock the module is ready to install; some vehicles still want a quick configuration/relearn so it adopts your VIN cleanly. We unlock it so that step succeeds.
Can you unlock an instrument cluster the same way?
Yes. 2014+ Global A clusters are VIN-locked the same way. We clear the lock so a used cluster boots and works - though we do not alter odometer values.
My screen is cracked — can unlocking fix that?
No. VIN unlocking is a software/security operation. A cracked LCD, dead touch layer, or water-damaged board is a hardware failure and needs physical repair or a different donor.
