EWS-DME comm error — EWS module not authenticating with DME
BMW diagnostic code. Below: what it means, common causes, symptoms, and the exact bench-programming fix path.
Common causes
- •Failed EWS module (most common on E36/E39 cars)
- •Donor DME installed without EWS re-sync
- •Failed CAN bus wiring between EWS and DME
- •Aftermarket EWS module not properly coded
Symptoms you'll see
- •Crank-no-start
- •EWS warning intermittent
- •Sometimes starts, often doesn't
- •Replacement EWS modules also failing
The fix path
For E36/E39/E46/E53 cars where EWS modules are getting hard to source, BMW DME EWS Delete ($150) is the permanent fix. The DME stops requiring the EWS handshake; any working physical key starts the car.
