EWS-DME comm errorEWS module not authenticating with DME

BMW diagnostic code. Below: what it means, common causes, symptoms, and the exact bench-programming fix path.

Common causes

  • Failed EWS module (most common on E36/E39 cars)
  • Donor DME installed without EWS re-sync
  • Failed CAN bus wiring between EWS and DME
  • Aftermarket EWS module not properly coded

Symptoms you'll see

  • Crank-no-start
  • EWS warning intermittent
  • Sometimes starts, often doesn't
  • Replacement EWS modules also failing

The fix path

For E36/E39/E46/E53 cars where EWS modules are getting hard to source, BMW DME EWS Delete ($150) is the permanent fix. The DME stops requiring the EWS handshake; any working physical key starts the car.
