B1601 — Ford PATS received invalid format of key code

Common causes

  • •PATS receiver ring around ignition cylinder failing
  • •Transponder chip in key damaged
  • •Aftermarket alarm interference
  • •Failed dealer key-programming left PATS table corrupted
  • •Used PCM installed with mismatched PATS table

Symptoms you'll see

  • •Cranks normally, no fuel pulse / no spark
  • •THEFT light flashing on dashboard
  • •Engine starts for 1-2 seconds then dies
  • •Same code with multiple keys

The fix path

Diagnose the PATS receiver first (continuity + 12V at the receiver connector). If receiver checks out, options are: (1) replace receiver + reprogram keys at dealer, or (2) PATS Delete service ($199) that disables PATS at the PCM level entirely.
