Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Yellow steering lock light on my BMW E90 / E60
  • Red steering wheel lock warning, car won't start
  • Steering lock won't release / clicks but won't unlock
  • ELV counter maxed out after a low battery
  • Don't want to pay the dealer for a new steering column

Won't fix:

  • A mechanically seized or burnt ELV motor (the actuator may still need replacing)
  • Steering column held under torque (park level / relieve column load)
  • Low/failing battery causing the fault (replace the battery)
  • FEM/BDC F-series cars that don't use this CAS counter

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

What actually causes the steering-lock warning?
The CAS keeps an ELV counter that increments on key-on/start cycles; a low battery or aging lock can trip a fault and lock out the car. Resetting the counter makes the system treat the lock as new and clears the warning.
Do I send the CAS or the steering-lock unit?
The counter lives in the CAS, so the CAS is what we work. If you've already pulled the ELV/ESL unit, send it too and we'll check both sides.
Will this fix a mechanically dead steering lock?
It fixes the electronic/data side - the counter and CAS ELV data. If the physical ELV motor is seized or burnt, that actuator may still need replacement; the reset stops it from locking you out again.
My battery was weak when this happened — is that related?
Very likely. Low voltage is the most common trigger. Replace/charge the battery first; we reset the counter so the warning clears and doesn't immediately return.
Is this cheaper than a dealer steering-column repair?
Substantially. Dealers often quote $700-$1,500+ to replace the steering lock/column assembly. Our bench counter reset and ELV data repair is a $250 flat rate.
